I am against any pay raise for members of the Lake County Board. With the rising price of food and gasoline, and the increase in property taxes, the Lake County Board should be sending a message to its constituents that we all need to sacrifice a little until we get through with this rough patch in the economy.
As elected officials, the members of the County Board should set an example for the residents of Lake County. Because of the current challenges in the economy, the members of the Lake County Board had the opportunity to say that they, too, are willing to sacrifice and set an example for the good of the community. Elected officials could have shown leadership by postponing their salary increase.
When the economy improves, local schools are financed without huge increases in our property taxes and the government develops a sensible energy policy, an increase in the salaries of the members of the Lake County Board might have been appropriate. Until that time, I'm not in favor of any plan to increase the pay of Lake County Board members.
